Freakin' Fabbo Friday

I think I'm going to start a new "Share Your Stuff" kind of day.  So Fridays will be "Freakin' Fabbo Friday".  It's not like we don't share our goodies every day but this makes it official for me.  Just me.  Y'all can do whatever you want of course.  But if you want to play along, COOL!!!!

First off, I found this Siamese cat planter and even though he has a crack down his hiney he reminds me of all the Siamese my mother used to raise back in California.  Her first Siamese, Mildred, was an offspring of Pyewacket, the cat in the Kim Novak movie "Bell, Book & Candle" (Pyewacket was Kim's actual cat).  At one time we had over 30 Siamese running all over the place, and even though these were fairly valuable registered cats my father forced my mother to keep them outside, so every once in awhile someone would come to visit and if they left their car windows open the cats would jump in.  Most of the time we'd get the cat back, but not always.  All of our cats were sweet and were always surprising people who thought Siamese were evil mean hellcats.  They were also "appleheads", or the traditional old school round headed Siamese, unlike the ones nowadays that look like they've had one facelift too many.

Found this guy recently at an antique mall--he's a wall pocket/planter and I think he's quite studly despite being pink.

These vases are fun to collect--they're usually not too expensive even in antique malls and they're definitely vintage.  These were labeled "Table Vases" in Anchor-Hocking catalogs but the Fire-King book says collectors call them "Deco".  They come in either crystal with fired-on colors or Vitrock fired-on.  I also have one in Tangerine and am DYING to find one in jade-ite.  There's one at my antique mall but she wants way too much money for it.

Hazel-Atlas Moderntone Platonite in dreamy pastel colors.  I like to mix and match with these and they all go together nicely.

Y'all know how much I love my Pyrex and the way I like collecting it is to find one piece here and one piece there.  Besides, an entire set of primary color mixing bowls on eBay or Etsy is ridiculously expensive and the shipping (I mean, this is heavy glass) is understandably high.  I've been looking for the green bowl for quite some time and found it just last weekend, sitting in the back of a flea market, covered with dust and begging me to take it home and wash it.  Which is EXACTLY what I did.

Finally, my pride and joy.  Every time I see a Fire-King "Tulips" grease jar it's without the lid or I determine that it's a mixing bowl.  I've seen a couple grease jars WITH the lid but also WITH a very high price since in the Fire-King book they're listed at between $60-75!  So even factoring in the "considering today's economy" statement that the appraisers use all the time now on "Antiques Roadshow", I still think I got a pretty good deal on this one for $18.  Of course now I'm going to hear from one of you who found this same grease jar at a yard sale for 50 cents.  Yeah, yeah, yadda yadda yadda.

  2. Freakin' fabo is right! I love that little Siamese kitty. Actually I love it all. I've been trying to limit my time on the computer because my neck is all out of whack. I just now read back on a few posts. The Melvin (r.i.p. Melvin) mystery had me sitting on the edge of the couch! (I'm using my husbands laptop now, it's neck friendly) Great detective work.

  4. Ha ha don't you hate it when other folks get their vintage goodies for a quarter at some yard sale? I NEVER do!

Well, I got lucky on the pink appliances! I guess that makes up for all the 25 cent deals I lost out on grrr lol...

And I have to heave a heavy sigh and scroll past pyrex on eBay. The oh-so sweet pink nesting bowls are so hard to pass up, but I'll have to wait for a set of those.

We had a Siamese cat too when we were kids. They are sweet, and yes, looked like cats back then, not a freaky Joan Rivers drag queen plastic surgery-gone-overboard deal!

Happy Friday Christine! I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Also hope Dad is doing well!

  5. I absolutely LOVE every one of those things. We had a Siamese cat when we were kids, and my sister kind of collects them. I've never seen a pink rooster like that.
And no, I have never found anything that fabulous at a yard sale! I've always wanted those tulip Fire-King pieces.

  6. Oh my good gravy, where do I start on this post?! How about the beginning: I was born in California and my very first ever pet was a siamese cat named Sandy that lived to be ten years old and moved to Oklahoma with me. Combine that with a sister named Christine, I think we must be cosmically connected somehow. I absolutely love Pyrex, Fire King, Milk Glass of any kind and won't drink coffee unless it's poured into a glass CUP...all of your glass is beautiful and such treasures! Fabulous Finds Friday sounds like a winning post to me!
    Or even Freakin Fabbo Friday!

  7. I'd definitely call those vases deco. I have never seen those. I'll have to keep an eye out, since I love deco style.

Pyrex bowls bring back so many childhood memories. I wish I had the ones my mother used to own. I do have her Hall Autumn Leaf bowls, and use them nearly every day. Those puppies have worked hard over the years.

Wow, a grease jar. Those would still be handy today.

  8. Cute stuff! I just found the big yellow bowl in your set there, I'd love a whole set too. My neighbor is trying for a set of all red bowls like that..is that even possible? The "apple head" cats cracked me up. My fat calico has an apple head and a pumpkin body!

  9. Oh Chris! Now you got me collecting more crap! Because that little voice in my brain (the antique dealers friend/ my wallets enemy) is whispering to me "No kitchen is complete without a set of those pyrex mixing bowls..." Haha I know where theresa Yellow one, but last time I checked she wanted $30 for it! What kind of price is that? I thought to much...
