Like many other bloggers, I love planters. Why I do not know. Plants do not like me. They perish at the very sight of me. Perhaps I love planters because I have a dream that one day, I too will be able to experience the joy of watching a seedling push its little head up from the the planter's dirt and NOT scream, "OH MY GOD! It's HER!" and immediately shrivel up and die. In the meantime, I shall collect vintage planters and pile them in the shed. Here are some of my recent acquisitions:
Anything with a drip glaze catches my eye--added plus is the basket-y look.
The baby is huge and heavy. I'm pretty sure you could drop it on the floor and it would put a pretty good size crack in the concrete and stay intact!
I saw this one in a McCoy book--the one in the book is green. I like the smooth whiteness.
Marked Brush USA. The design is mesmerizing.
I spotted this one because of the lovely rich turquoise and brown colors and then saw the design on the base. Hmmmm.
As I'm sure many of you know, this design has appeared in many cultures, including our own Native Americans, way before Nazi Germany co-opted it. McCoy made a "good luck" stein decorated with the swastika symbol in the 1920's. I have Buddhist prayer flags hanging on my front fence with some swastikas--actually, I hung the flags up and THEN saw the swastikas. Figured most of my neighbors would think I'd finally given up my liberal ways and come around to their way of thinkin' (although maybe not--nobody firebombed my house the whole time I had the Obama For President sign on the front lawn).
Anyway, I like the vase.
I love planters, too - and I do not have a thumb that even remotely resembles ANY shade of green!
ReplyDeleteOh, well- they work great for holding everything else besides plants.
fab planters. my answer? using them for everything but plants. mine are roomy ceramic homes for pens, notes, bills, kitchen brushes, my kids' toothbrushes. anything but a plant. why? because even miracle grow can't save my ass.
ReplyDeleteThats neat about the last planter. Theres some big historic house in Oklahoma and the bathroom was done in swasticas but the hsoue was built like 1899 and it was a symbol for good luck!
ReplyDeleteNo green thumb here either. I'm hoping my herb garden will survive if my husband takes care of the watering and I don't show my face. The little guys definitely take cover when they see me coming. I just love every single one of those lovely planters though. It's hard to pass them up, I understand completely.
ReplyDeleteI too love these planters, and I don't always use them for planting. One holds the liquid dish soap and dish scrub brush next to the kitchen sink. Keeps the counter from getting wet :)
ReplyDeleteI tend to be drawn to those too...I have a four piece yellow set that I'm eventually going to sell, if I ever get any time to myself!!
ReplyDeleteI love planters too! I can only grow succulents & cactus because they are ok with almost never being watered. Also, some daisies that I got in a cheap little pot were transplanted in the flower bed and went bonkers. Good luck with your brown thumb!
ReplyDeleteI like planters, too and absolutely love everyone you picture in your post!!! I have put candy in them instead of plants. Bigger ones can hold pine cones or Easter Eggs. They're beautiful!

We went to an antique store about 6 years ago. They had a postcard from the 1800's that had swastikas on it and messages of good luck. They were considered a sign of good luck back then.
ReplyDeleteYou know you don't have to put plants in planters! It's a great way to display postcards, store glasses, serve chips, etc!
I love planters also and you have a very nice collection. I do grow some plants in mine but also use them for all sorts of things.
ReplyDeleteThese are GREAT! The Marked Brush USA is my favorite! Great finds...as usual! Love you!
ReplyDeleteYou don't NEED to use them as planters girlie. I could whip up some mighty good tiki drinks for every single one of those!! That last one would hold a good zombie or Rum punch!!
ReplyDeleteAlways loved these.
ReplyDeleteSo affordable, available in every color and shape... And you can fill them with retro plastic flowers (they never croak lol).
Wall pockets are cool too.
You have some great planters! I love that pink one. I have a lot of empties hanging around, too. They're so versatile, inexpensive & they have a LOT of character, compared to the ones you see today..blah.
ReplyDeleteps. I rec'd the gift you sent me, THANK YOU SOO MUCH. I feel so spoiled :) I'll post pics tomorrow..
These are SO pretty! But, sadly, plants don't like me, either... it's so pathetic. They do better when I ignore them. When I attempt to care for them, they yellow, shrivel, dry-up and/or die. :(
ReplyDeleteThe pink and the cream catch my eye, but especially that PINK one! Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI too love the pink planters.. I collect them but I never plant in them. I hate to put dirt in them, they are way too pretty!
ReplyDeleteI am a green thumb though, give me a seed, I'll grow yu a plant of some sort :0
I am obsessed with planters. I love the pink one you have pictured!
ReplyDeletePink, Pink, I like the Pink!
