Mom had gone up to Birmingham to visit and to give us some time away from each other. Sally would drive her halfway and then I'd pick her up. This was usually in the afternoon, so unfortunately the sun was always beating down on the right side of the car while going south.
If ever the word "wizened" defined someone, it defined Mom--she had shrunk so much in her later years that she could barely even see out the window of my Pontiac G6. Needless to say, the sunvisors were useless for her (note: she's not wearing a hat--that's the sunvisor doing a great job of blocking the sun off the top of her head).
So she was getting more and more irritated with the sun blasting down on her, I was getting more and more irritated having to listen to her bitch, and the ride slowly degraded into her muttering angrily and me staring straight ahead, trying not to just drive off the road and end it all.
I suddenly realized that she had stopped muttering and looked over at her and saw that she had stuffed a wad of Kleenex into her sunglasses to ward off the sun. I looked at her and without saying a word grabbed my camera and took the shot, then I busted out laughing, she looked over at me, that was even more hilarious seeing her head-on, she started laughing, and things got pretty wonderful for a few precious minutes.
January 26 will mark one year since she passed. We love you, Bama.

you know.........I've always found that pic of Mom sad and depressing, since it shows how "odd" she'd become, but you made it a happy, funny memory instead, Sis.........thank you so much for that. I love you.
