GJB Update!

(Wasn't he a cute lil guy?)

Dad had surgery Thursday afternoon at 4PM, which is a weird time for surgery, but anyway.  The surgery part went great but apparently he wouldn't wake up when he had been taken back to his room so THAT caused some anxiety.  Fortunately the hospital staff had decided to pay attention to an 84 year old one-legged diabetic who'd just had surgery and managed to wake him up.  We were wondering why they'd do surgery on the same day he had dialysis, but hey, we're no-nothings and anyway, one doesn't question El Doctor, does one?

Anyway, he's doing great--they'd removed the tip of his fibula AND a bit of tendon but they're pretty sure they got all the infection in that particular area.  Now we just wait for Mr. Evil Staph Infection to pop up somewhere else.  So far he's been in Dad's clavicle (chunk removed), his knee (LEG removed), and remaining ankle (see above).

Let's just hope it doesn't travel up to his head . . .  Or anyway else, for that matter!

I'll let y'all know when he's scheduled to go home.

  4. Glad to hear it went well...my dad usually took DAYS to come out of anesthesia, so I always feared any surgery. We're sending healing vibes...

  6. Oh gee! So stressful! Glad to hear all is well tho lol...

Hey, question Doctors. You have a right too, they are not infallible. Been through enough Doctor/hospital times with family to know, if you are not sure about something, bring it up, ask, inquire.

Times I wish I had in the past, I learned the hard way!

  7. Thinking about your father, and your family.

My FIL (also diabetic) was recently hospitalized with an infection that resulted in the loss of a middle toe (later discovered the infection was probably caused by a piece of glass that he never felt in that foot). The infection spread quickly because of the diabetes, but he was still very lucky.

His primary care physician had taken him off of insulin a couple of months prior (which stunned hubby and me), then this happened. The hospital doctor immediately placed him back on insulin.

You do have to wonder sometimes don't you?

Wishing your dad a speedy recovery.

  8. Gosh what a lot to go through, glad he's round from surgery, I hope for a swift recovery.

As for questioning doctors I am queen of questioning doctors, when my husband was in a coma and 6 months in recovy I questioned everything and I'm glad I did, sometimes the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing. I still question anything that the docs do, even if it's right at least I'm armed with knowledge. Even though we have a national health service I still see us as paying customers, paying customers can question what's going on!

Can you tell it's a subject close to my heart!!

  11. Oh my, that's a lot for anyone to have to go through. He sounds like quite the guy and I, too, hope that this is the last of the infection. He sure was a cute little guy.

  12. So glad to hear that the surgery went ok. It just boggles my mind, how well these old timers come through surgeries. My Mom had surgery 2 weeks ago, for skin cancer, and they wanted her sitting up right away afterwards, and walking over to a chair. My sister and I were so upset, because it seemed like they were rushing her, but once she got up, she was perfectly fine. I finally got a card for GJB, and it will go out tomorrow.
Love those little matchboxes, and your estate sale finds too. I've sent you an e-mail, after looking at those 7 things about you on your sidebar!
