All Kinds of Xmas Wonderfulness!

I really hadn't planned on decorating this year due to (1) my house is a mess, and (2) we're sort of depressed over the jobless situation.  That being said (god, I just love to use that phrase), I did manage to pull out some holiday stuff to put around the living room.  Since I had to move other stuff, I also had to clean due to some serious dust coverage.  I did all this whilst El Husbando sat in his comfy chair watching either a program about war or a program about war OR a program about war.

He does love him some Military Channel!

After I'd uttered one of several loud "Oh my god my back is KILLING me!" screams, he hit the mute button, looked around the room, and muttered, "Looks good."  I literally LIVE for moments like that in my marriage, really I do.

And that will be all for the snide snarky remarks, since it's getting to look alot like Christmas around these here parts.  Oh wait, one more: HEY, JIM, you know, JIM up in Nova Scotia?  Hellooooooo--it was 29 degrees F here this morning.  I realize that this isn't the frozen tundra like you live in but hey, I'd say 29 degrees F might even induce a few shivers in even the heartiest eh-saying Northerner!  Of course it's going to warm up to somewhere in the 60's today instead of it staying frozen solid until March like up there . . .

Ho Ho Ho!!!

Here's my Santa bank.  I wish the manufacturer hadn't painted all that brown highlighting on him since every year when I pull him out of the Xmas Stuff Box I start washing him until I remember that it's paint, not crud.

A friend of mine is a semi-regular vendor at the flea market off I-10 and when I visited  him recently he had a collection of snowglobes and other Christmas stuff.  I got four snowglobes for a quarter each, but let me assure you that this was not the bargain it seems.  The snowglobes still had their original water and snow, which would have been great except for one thing.  THEY WERE FULL OF CRUD!  Floating, wiggling, poop-brown crud.  When I got them home, the first thing I did was don a pair of rubber gloves.  You know, the kind you would use if you were handling a test tube full of the Ebola virus.  I then fought long and hard to remove the little plugs (which is decidedly more difficult when you're wearing rubber gloves) and emptied everything down the drain.  The next step was to soak everything in a water/bleach/vinegar solution and pray that it didn't remove all the color.

After they were sanitized and sparkling clean, I refilled them with filtered water--I put some glitter into one but I'm really just kind of liking all the bubbles.  I love this one--the little house is so cartoony!

Two of the snowglobes were from the New Orleans World's Fair.  I found this website and it's a fountain of information and (non-stealable but purchasable) photographs of this and other World's Fairs.  I wasn't living here in 1984 so I wasn't an attendee but from the photographs it doesn't look like this was one of the better World's Fairs.  As a matter of fact, it went bankrupt halfway through!  This snowglobe depicts the Mermaid Gate and has a cute little steamboat.

The steamboat moves back and forth when you shake it!

When I found these blowmolds at a flea market they were marked Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus.  Hmmmmm.  The Santa figure came with a little red bulb, so at night he looks like Devil Claus!

A counter full of Christmas!  The blowmold Santa is only about a foot tall and the perfect size for an indoor display.

I did make sure to put in a clear bulb, though.  One Devil Claus is enough.

I've got a bunch more stuff to share so stayed tuned, everyone.  Oh, and just what does Mr. BooBooKitty have to say about all this wonderfulness?

  4. Looks like you and your cat are dealing with the holidays as best you can. I'm on my second virus of the season.... I wish someone would shove me into a clean snow globe and then clean my house for me. I agree, at the moment, with Barbara...Ho freakin' ho.

  5. Once the decorations are out, the mood is always lifted. I actually dread decorating for the holidays and if I didn't have kids and a childish husband who loves Christmas, I wouldn't decorate because I'm lazy. Funny, once it is all decorated, then I'm happy I did it and instantly feel "Christmasy" if that is a word?

  7. Hello mon ami... I love your Christmas hubbub, and you did very well at cleaning your snow globe. Being sheltered as I am, I had no idea there was a World's Fair in 1984!? Dammit- I missed it!

Thank you for the props on my last entry. I'm a-scared. Farts. I hate this nauseous anxiety shite. Dammit.

P.S. I know how you and hubs are feeling about the lack of employment thing. Hubby and I feel this anxiety - but I'm employed. Doesn't mean we aren't broke as a joke though. So yeah... you guys aren't alone.

    Hugs.

  8. Yeah, what 1984 Worlds Fair? lol do they still have them? I keep asking, no one seems to know!!

Gee, I tell ya Christine, the older and more crippled up my back gets and the joints creak, the simpler I want to make decorating for every holiday!

Bigger-fewer... I know I keep saying it. And here I am with about 15 boxes of Christmas stuff between mine and Moms lol...

  11. Ha ha! Snap. I have a husband who watches war on a history channel (aka spies/WW2 channel- because nothing, it seems, happened before or since) and I love snowglobes! Never had a grotty one before though- YUK. Glad they cleaned up nicely.

  12. I know where you're coming from, both with the messy house and joblessness.

There were a couple of years when I had sheetrock dust all over my house from remodeling, and I had no desire to decorate. I did it anyway. It made me feel better.

The same goes for the times that our future has been up-in-the-air due to unemployment. Decorating made the house bright and cheery, and helped us to forget some of our troubles for a while. I think that's why so many more people decorate in a poor economy. Pretty lights and decorations lift the spirits some.

Cute Santa bank, but nothing like the one I used to have. Mine was glazed ceramic, made in Japan. I've come across several on eBay for cheap this year, but haven't felt like bidding. I'm not very trusting of eBay sellers anymore (no offense to the good and honest sellers - I know you're out there).

Your lighted Santa reminds me of the one my parents had when I was a child. It was taller than I was (I was five), and sat on our front porch for years.
